Short Break Guide: Woolacombe

North Devon is brimming with natural beauty, stunning stately homes and activities for all the family – and Woolacombe is a fantastic place to start. If you’re planning a long weekend or short break with us at Willingcott Valley Holiday Village, near Woolacombe, then be sure to add some of these to your list of must-sees.

Hit the beach

Woolacombe beach is only two miles from our holiday village and is perfect for a day trip with the little ones. With great parking facilities, beach shop, toilets and a lifeguard service, you can rest assured that you’ll have everything you need. Right by the shoreline you’ll find some lovely cafés where you can tuck into a selection of freshly baked cakes or a lovely cup of tea if you’ve popped down for a brisk walk in the colder months. Woolacombe beach is great for surfing enthusiasts and with the tide going out quite far, there’s plenty of room for your most elaborate sandcastle attempts!

Walk and wander

If you’re using your short break near Woolacombe as a chance to explore the local area then there’s a number of walks that are well worth a wander. Whether you want to enjoy the dramatic craggy coastal path, or the cinematic Exmoor National Park, there’s something for everyone. Home to a variety of landscapes including woodland, valleys, moorland and farms, Exmoor offers a fascinating selection of wildlife. Taking one of the guided tours provides you with all the information you need, but if you prefer the freedom of discovering it for yourself then you won’t be disappointed.

Take the Tarka Trail

For those that prefer to see the landscape whizzing past as they travel on two wheels, the Tarka Trail is great – and it’s conveniently accessed just outside our front entrance! Although it’s not likely you’ll manage the whole 163-mile trail during your long weekend, this figure of 8 trail takes you through the tranquil countryside, along the rugged coast and past towns such as Barnstaple, Ilfracombe, Torrington and Croyde. There are plenty of places you can hire bikes, but if you need a little more information during your stay then we’re more than happy to help!

Visit quintessentially British villages

Aside from its magnificent scenery, Devon is also known for its quaint, chocolate box villages. The twin villages of Lynton and Lynmouth are truly two gems in the county’s crown. Ideal for a romantic day out, you can take the opportunity to stroll the historic streets or make your way over the cliff-top walks.

Alternatively, if you prefer to soak up some of the heritage of the area, then the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway spans the area between the two towns. This fully water-powered railway is the only one in the UK and you’ll be treated to breath-taking views across the bay.

Be impressed with Arlington Court

This is the perfect opportunity to put your National Trust membership to use. With lovely gardens, and authentic contents, this impressive stately home is full of treasures and surprises. After walking through the awe-inspiring house and discovering the delights of the gardens, be sure to visit their historic carriage display. Full of finery, they are in great condition and a truly beautiful sight. The on-site tearooms are the perfect place to experience a real Devon afternoon tea with a lovely selection of sandwiches and treats to keep you fuelled for the rest of your trip.

We’d love to welcome you for a short break or long weekend in one of our traditionally-built cottages near Woolacombe. With stays from 3 nights available, we offer the ideal base to explore the local area and experience the peaceful surroundings.
