2 Day Itinerary: Exmoor National Park

Nestled in the southwest of England, Exmoor National Park is an awe-inspiring area of natural beauty, offering a perfect escape for nature lovers. It is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, wildlife lovers and those who appreciate the charm of the quaint villages. The park is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including England's largest herd of wild deer.

With so much to explore and discover, it can be overwhelming to decide where to begin. To help you make the most out of your visit, we have crafted a two-day itinerary that covers some of the park's most popular attractions.

Day 1 at Exmoor National Park

Morning

things to do in dunster

Start your day by exploring the charming village of Dunster. This medieval village is home to a 13th-century castle, a working watermill, and a number of quaint shops and cafes. Take a stroll through the village's cobbled streets and take in the stunning views of the surrounding countryside. After a morning of sightseeing, head over to Hathaways, an Italian restaurant that is famous for its great quality food and service. This is the perfect place to stop for a delicious lunch and to recharge your batteries for the rest of the afternoon.

Afternoon

In the afternoon, why not take a trip to Tarr Steps? Located along the River Barle, this clapper bridge is an impressive feat of engineering that dates back to the Bronze Age. As you stroll along the riverbank, you'll be transported back in time, to an era where this bridge was used as a vital crossing point for both humans and livestock. Take a moment to appreciate the intricacy of the structure, made up of huge stone slabs that have stood the test of time.

Evening

swimming pool in woolacombe

After a day of adventuring, head over to Tarr Farm for a cosy meal and some well-deserved relaxation. And when you're ready to retire for the night, our self-catered cottages in Willingcott Valley offer the perfect retreat. Take a dip in our heated swimming pool (open from 25th May to end of September 2024) to unwind and end the day on a high note. It's the perfect way to recharge and enjoy some much-needed peace.

Day 2 at Exmoor National Park

Morning

Bench Looking to Lynton Lynmouth at Sunset

On your second day, head to the coast to explore the stunning beaches and cliffs of the Exmoor coastline. Start at the picturesque village of Lynmouth, where you can take a ride on the famous cliff railway and enjoy stunning views of the sea. From there, head to the nearby Valley of Rocks, a dramatic landscape of jagged rock formations and stunning vistas. The valley is a popular spot for hikers and walkers, with many trails to explore. You can take a leisurely stroll or a more challenging hike to the top of the hills for some stunning vistas of the surrounding area.

After your hike, we recommend you treat yourself to a delicious lunch at one of the lovely cafes or restaurants in the area. The Old Bank and The Vanilla Podd both offer a tempting selection of dishes to satisfy your cravings.

Afternoon

exmoor zoo

In the afternoon, take a walk on the wild side with a visit to Exmoor Zoo. This award-winning zoo is home to an impressive range of animals, including meerkats, monkeys, big cats, and birds of prey. You can learn about the park's conservation efforts and even book a close-up encounter with some of the animals for a truly unforgettable experience. If you prefer to bring your own food, the zoo also has a covered picnic area where you can enjoy a delicious meal with your loved ones while surrounded by the beautiful wildlife.

Evening

End your trip with a relaxing evening in one of the area's cosy pubs. With a roaring fire and a pint of local ale, you'll be able to reflect on the amazing sights and experiences you've had during your two-day visit to Exmoor.
