Best North Devon Attractions to Enjoy in Winter

We highly recommend a trip to North Devon in the winter months. There's so much to see and do here, even in the off-peak season!

Historical Attractions

Historical attractions are great options for a fun day out with family or friends this winter. Dunster Castle, with its striking architecture and gardens, becomes a lovely setting during the colder months, hosting special events that celebrate the season with festive decorations and activities. The castle’s grounds invite exploration, perfect for warming up afterwards in its cosy tea room with comforting treats.

Similarly, the charming village of Clovelly, renowned for its car-free streets and unique shops, offers a picturesque winter experience. You'll be treated to stunning coastal views as you wanter the the cobbled pathways.

Exploring Exmoor National Park

Exmoor National Park is a must-visit during winter, offering stunning landscapes that range from moorland to woodland and coastline. The crisp air and peaceful surroundings create the perfect setting for scenic drives and hikes. Take a walk to the valley of Lyn, where wild ponies can be spotted against a backdrop of spectacular views.

The Exmoor Heritage Coast, with its rugged cliffs and panoramic vistas, is another highlight worth exploring, especially in the winter months when the area is less crowded. Visitors can enjoy the natural beauty with a picnic, perhaps indulging in some hot chocolate while soaking in the scenery.

Winter Wildlife Watching

Winter in North Devon is a great season for wildlife watching, showcasing unique fauna in stunning locations. Watersmeet is a must-visit, where you can spot kingfishers and playful otters along the rivers. Morte Point offers dramatic cliffs and seabird sightings, including puffins and guillemots, as well as the possibility of dolphins in the sea.

Why not also visit Combe Martin Wildlife Park where you can get close encounters with a range of animals animals such as wolves and lemurs, along with educational talks.

Throughout the festive month of December, various towns in North Devon come alive with Christmas markets that celebrate the holiday spirit. These vibrant markets offer a fantastic opportunity not only to shop for thoughtful gifts but also to indulge in a wide array of delicious local food and drink. We recommend visiting the ones in Bideford and Ilfracombe.
