A Day Out in Lynton and Lynmouth

Ride the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway

Lynton and Lynmouth's funicular Cliff Railway is one of the most famous Westcountry visitor attractions. First opened in 1890, the railway has won multiple awards and is known far and wide for being the highest water powered railway in the world. Not only does the Cliff Railway have the practical benefit of connecting Lynton and Lynmouth, it also boasts unbelievable coastal views whilst in transit. To complete the experience, you must take the opportunity to have a cream tea in the clifftop cafe. Sit back and appreciate the grade II listed 500ft railway – a historical gem which visitors enjoy time and time again.

When you park up in the main car park in Lynton one of the first landmarks you'll see is the striking village church. The impressive Grade II listed building is well maintained and fondly appreciated by the local community. Passing visitors often stroll into the churchyard and follow the path through to see the stunning panoramic coastal view. Picnic benches are positioned here to make it a comfortable place to sit and enjoy the special backdrop.

Practice your putting skills at Hole-in-1 Golf Lynmouth

For visitors who fancy brushing up on their putting technique, Lynmouth's Hole-in-1 is the ideal activity. Set in the pretty coastal location near the harbour, Hole-in-1 can proudly boast being the only 36-hole putting green in the South West. Complete with two separate courses, there are options for more serious competition as well as light hearted family fun. Uncover local history at Lyn & Exmoor Museum

Nestled in Lynton you'll find the charming Lyn & Exmoor Museum. While being modest in size it is home to an impressive collection of agricultural and domestic tools from Lynton and Exmoor. Exhibits also include a range of maritime, railway, and natural history items. Highlights include a Victorian doll's house and a spooky twist with the house's own ghost.

Learn about the Lynmouth Flood at the Memorial Hall

Situated opposite the harbour is the Lynmouth Flood memorial hall. Originally the site of the village's lifeboat house, the building was tragically washed away in the 1952 flood. Now the permanent exhibition space provides a chance to learn the local history of one of Lynmouth's most significant events. Walks around Watersmeet

Not far from Lynton and Lynmouth is the former fishing lodge at Watersmeet. Since 1996 the house is managed by the National Trust and serves as a delightful information centre, tea room and shop. The site marks the spot where visitors begin their exploration and walks around the 40 miles of woodlands and coastal footpaths. The attraction can be enjoyed all year round, the only thing to check is the tea room opening times to make sure this is open when visiting.

Explore the Valley of the rocks

West of Lynton is the popular walking paradise of the valley of the rocks. This one of a kind valley runs parallel to the North Devon Coast and is an interesting part of the region to explore. Look out for feral goats on your travels and the very unusual rock formations, which will have you mesmerised by their unique beauty.

Sit back and sample Devon delicacies

Sometimes all you want is to take things easy on your holiday and sample local delicacies. There are some great choices especially in Lynmouth for kicking back with a cream tea and scone or a swift half of one of the local brews. The relaxing treat will be made even more special with the benefit of spectacular views almost everywhere you look. Quaint fishing boats add splashes of colour to the harbour.
