Top 5 Pubs and Restaurants in North Devon

North Devon is popular with foodies thanks to the abundance of dining out options available. North Devon's pubs and restaurants are amongst the best in South West England, with many locals and tourists enjoying the range of food and drinks on offer.

We’re extremely lucky to be located in Woolacombe, and have many fantastic places to eat and drink just a stone’s throw from our home at Willingcott Valley. Here, we share our top 5 pubs and restaurants in North Devon – all offer something slightly different and are worth a visit when staying in one of our self-catering cottages.

1. Beachside Grill, Saunton

Beachside Grill overlooks Saunton Sands Beach and offers high quality food and drinks by the sea. There are few things better in life than enjoying a refreshing drink, a bite to eat and an unbeatable view on their decked area in the summer.

For the meat eaters, we highly recommend trying one of their Exmoor steaks, the Exmoor Philly Steak sandwich, or a burger from the BSG Grill!

Beachside Grill can cater for dietary requirements and serve creative options for vegetarians, vegans and coeliacs. On their large all-day menu, you’ll find a range of tasty dishes, which utilise fresh and local ingredients wherever possible.

Whether you’re coming for a full meal or just a quick beer or a coffee, you’ll enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and far-reaching sea views.

2.The Crown Inn, West Down

The Crown Inn brings the country vibe to the coast – much like us at Willingcott Valley! It’s also just an eight-minute drive from our collection of self-catering cottages near Woolacombe.

The Crown Inn is a traditional 17th century freehouse, and is situated in the nearby village of West Down. At the bar, you’ll find a range of house draught lagers and ciders as well as guest ales and spirits. In the summer, there is no better place to enjoy a refreshing drink than in The Crown Inn’s beer garden. If you're visiting in the winter, make sure you reserve a table by the log fire!

If you’re popping in for a meal, there’s a wide selection of hearty pub classics, including minted lamb hotpot, beef lasagne and battered cod and chips.

Their Sunday Lunch is also one of the best around, with a choice of meats – Belly of Pork, Beef Topside or Basted Turkey – or a Chestnut and Pumpkin Seed Roast for vegetarians – and all the trimmings!

3. 62 The Bank, Barnstaple

62 The Bank is full of history and the place to go for a buzzing atmosphere, great food and a well-crafted cocktail. Regarded by many as one of Barnstaple’s best restaurants, 62 The Bank is set in a building that dates back to 1620.

Even though the atmosphere and décor are contemporary, this popular restaurant has retained its beautiful wood panelling – an ode to the buildings’ roots as a merchant’s house. This is juxtaposed by modern LED lights for a modern twist.

62 The Banks’ lunch and dinner menus feature feel good food, which is ‘expertly cooked and filled with explosive flavour’, as the restaurant likes to describe it.

The contemporary bistro is popular for their top-quality carveries and main meals! We recommend their famous Fajitas! You can add rump steak, tiger prawns, chicken, vegetables or cheese as per your preference!

Whether you’re popping in for an evening of drinks or a bite to eat, you simply must try a cocktail when visiting!

4. Pyne Arms, East Down

The award-winning Pyne Arms is held in high regard for their top-quality food.

Over the years the Pyne Arms earned a fantastic reputation and firmly cemented its position as one of the best restaurants in North Devon. The chefs are renowned for creating innovative dishes and using locally sourced and seasonal ingredients.

Their menu changes from week to week to ensure they always have something new to offer. This innovation and love for great, locally produced food saw them win Best Pub in the Devon Life food and drink awards in 2017, and rank as the 17th best Gastropub in the country.

The Pyne Arms is the place to go for an exciting, high-quality meal. Set in the hills of Exmoor National Park, the Pyne Arms is somewhat unassuming from the outside. Step inside and you’ll quickly realise why there has been so much buzz around this nationally acclaimed restaurant.
