Tarka Trail 'Missing Link' to be constructed
A 'missing link' section of the Tarka Trail (which runs near Willingcott) is to be constructed later this year. Following approval, a part of the multi-track which is designed for the combined use of walkers, cyclists and for equestrian use - is to be built between Willingcott and Buttercombe Lane.
This is great news for guests at Willingcott Valley as access to the Tarka Trail will be even easier from our North Devon self-catering cottages.
Tarka Trail missing section
Currently, the trail has a 6.4 km gap in between Knowle and Willingcott, between Ilfracombe and Barnstaple. Devon County Council said its completion was a "top priority" as it would go towards completing the coast-to-coast cycle network between Ilfracombe and Plymouth.
Project funding
The total cost of the completed project is estimated to be £220,000. Despite funding being a stumbling block for the project, the plan is to complete sections one-by-one. This means the remaining sections will be completed over time, and when funding becomes available. The money for the project will come from the local transport plan.
When will the Tarka Trail missing link be completed?
The council has negotiated access to construct its 600m (2,000ft) section of the project between November 2022 and March 2023. The work follows the route of a former railway line, and the council has ownership of all the land required. Work is expected to start later this year.
Discover the Tarka Trail
The Tarka Trail is a great way to explore the stunning North Devon landscape. Made up of traffic-free footpaths and cycleways, the 180 mile trail is largely flat and suitable for enjoying on foot or two-wheels.
We recommend the trail as a perfect nearby route to get outdoors on your holiday and discover landmarks and places to see. Find out more on our adventures on the Tarka Trail blog.
