North Devon Named As UK's First World Surfing Reserve

North Devon has been recognised as the first place in the UK to become a World Surfing Reserve (WSR).

This international designation acknowledges the area’s outstanding quality of surfing beaches, with the objective of bringing together the local community to celebrate and preserve its superb coastal heritage.

As the 12th destination to receive the recognition, North Devon joins an impressive list of world-renowned surf spots. These include Malibu and Santa Cruz in California, as well Australia's Gold Coast.

Stunning North Devon landscape

The North Devon coast is already established as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty since it was awarded the status in 1959. Also, the Unesco Biosphere around Braunton is noted for its landscapes, wildlife and cultural heritage.

The North Devon Surfing Reserve area covers roughly 30km (19 miles) of coastline, and takes in iconic beaches such as Woolacombe, Croyde, Saunton and Lynmouth. Together the offering of world-class surfing locations in North Devon represent the best in surfing styles and cater for all abilities, ranging from beginner to expert level.

About World Surfing Reserve (WSR)

The World Surfing Reserve (WSR) is a programme which launched in 2009 in California.

The organisation's mission is to "protect surf ecosystems around the globe".

Run by Save The Waves, the WSR's around the world, represent a global network of designated surfing reserves. Each one is managed and maintained by their individual local communities.

Adam Hall, co-founder of the surfing reserve in North Devon, said: "Our core focus is looking after the quality of the waves themselves and preserving the ecosystems that produce them. "Surf spots need to be celebrated, recognised and protected in the same way we protect and recognise beautiful national parks like Exmoor."
